John Hargraves â€“ Managing Director
John was born in 1942 in Auckland, where he studied music with Peter Godfrey, Ronald Tremaine and Thomas Rive. He became fascinated as a child with the pipe organ, from listening to records of Albert Schweitzer playing Bach and learned the piano for several years from age 12 and the pipe organ from age 16 on returning to Auckland . His first organ teacher was Trevor Sparling, organist of St David's Church, Khyber Pass and formerly Auckland City Organist. He served an organ-building apprenticeship with John Lee of Feilding (ex Rushworth & Dreaper) commencing at age 21 and in 1968 joined the fledgling South Island Organ Co in Timaru. Two years later he became a directorÂ and has served the Company ever since.Â In 2010 heÂ wasÂ named as a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to organ restoration. He is organist-choirmaster and an elder of Chalmers Presbyterian Church.
