The Critic’s Chair - Sunday 12 noon

Nicholas Grigsby reviews recent releases for Organ Week

BACH: Toccata & Fugue in D minor; Nun komm der Heiden Heiland; Her Jesu Christ, dich zu uns wend; Fantasia in C minor; Overture in the French Style; Toccata, Adagio & Fugue in C; Fantasia & Fugue in G minor; Sonatina to Cantata BWV106; In dir ist Freude - Kei Koito (Silbermann organ of Dresden Cathedral)

(Claves 50-1008)

“The big moments, it goes without saying, are breathtaking, in some respects down to the very talented audio engineers who worked on this disc. But in the softer pieces, the clarity and sharpness of the instrument is truly sizzling and you really feel like you're sitting in the middle of that great church, listening to this magical recital of Bach's music unfold around you.”

FRESCOBALDI: Keyboard Music Vol 9 - The First Book of Recercari - Roberto Loreggian (anonymous 18th-century organ of the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Casatico di Marcaria, Mantua Province)

(Brilliant Classics 94049)

“Loreggian's playing has a citrus zest about it, with so much vim and vigour injected into the performances that none of the 19 short pieces here sound samey.”

North German Baroque Organ Music, BRUHNS: Prelude in G; BOHM Ach wie nichtig, ach wie fluchtig; Vanter unser im Himmelreich; BACH: Toccata in G; An Wasserflusen Babylon; BUXTEHUDE: Te Deum laudamus; Prelude in D minor; LUBECK: Preamble in E; Nun last uns Gott dem Herren - James Tibbles (Ahrend organ of Monash University, Melbourne)

(Paladino Music PMR 0015)

“James Tibbles delivers an immaculate and flawless performance of a clever programme. He's right inside the music – and rightly so – given that he's lived, breathed and refined his approach to this challenging repertoire for much of his creative life. Each piece is wholeheartedly a consummate performance, oozing musicality and delicateness of touch throughout.”

SAINT-SAENS: Organ Music Volume 2: Three Preludes & Fugues Op 109; Seven Improvisations Op 150; Versets in E minor & F; Prelude in F - Andrew-John Smith (Cavaille-Coll organ of La Madeleine, Paris)

(Hyperion CDA 67815)

“The exciting thing about this recording is that [Smith] doesn't put his own personality ahead of the sound of the organ, one of France's most famous historic instruments. He allows the composer’s music to speak for itself, letting it unfold in an unruffled and confident manner.”

BINGHAM: Jacob's Ladder - parable for organ & strings; St Bride, assisted by angels; Prelude & Voluntary from Missa Brevis; Annunciation I; Hope; Into the wilderness; The Gift; Vold de nui; Gothick; Incarnation with shepherds dancing; Ancient Sunlight - Tom Wimpenny (Harrison & Harrison organ of St Albans Cathedral), Dmitri Ensemble/Graham Ross

(Naxos 8.572687)

“time, I suspect Judith Bingham will become considered in Britain what Olivier Messiaen was to liturgical composition in France. This disc is a real eye opener.”
